This wonderful, aromatic tea is unique and indigenous
to the southern most tip of the African continent. South Africans
have used it for centuries. Consumed for good health, refreshment and cooking
and organically grown in the mountains of the Southern Cape, it is a sub-family
of plants of the Fynbos species that are native only to this part of the world
and its specific climate.
Centuries ago the Khoi Khoin tribe arrived in the Cape, bringing
with them their respect and knowledge of the environment. They discovered
the Cape Honeybush (Cyclopia) and Rooibos (Aspalathus Linearis)
plants and found that infusions made from these indigenous herbs
were refreshing, healthy, and flavourful.
The healing qualities of Cape Honeybush, recommended by the Divine
(traditional) healers, still informs their lifestyle and tribal medicinal
practice. Modern science has since lent credibility to the
anecdotal tales of healing that have been passed on from generation to
generation. Cape Honeybush Tea has recently received FDA Certification in
the United States of America. News of the marvelous health and wellness
properties of these plants filtered through to the wider South African society.
Soon this unique plant was almost harvested to extinction. The Cape
Honeybush Tea Company, taking note that the tea plant, if nurtured, developed
and distributed under 100% Organic conditions, could become a world leader in
terms of its health and wellness benefits, embarked on years of research
dedicated to perfecting the re-introduction of the tea plant back to
nature, to grow naturally. State of the art processing and propagation
methods were developed, making the Cape Honeybush Tea Company a world
leader in terms of tea producers. Sadly one of the researchers, (Pierre
Taljaard) spending years in developing this high quality beverage, passed away
and never lived to see its full potential.
Today Cape Honeybush Tea is gaining popularity on the international
market, particularly in countries such as Japan, Germany and Switzerland and
now Canada, as more and more discerning and health conscious
buyers realize that they provide a delicious, healthy and economic
alternative to the more conventional beverages.
